Good to know – everything about «Handwerk & Design» at a glance

In fourteen days, «Handwerk & Design» will open its doors at the Munich Trade Fair Centre. First-class exhibitors will showcase exceptional handicrafts and high-quality design in Hall B1 from 8th to 12th March.

Jewellery d’Auteur: Art or commodity? Both: Jewellery d’auteur is wearable art and therefore never a mere commodity. It tells personal stories and captivates with a distinctive style.

Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein e.V.: The association has been dedicated to the cultivation and promotion of contemporary arts and crafts in Bavaria for more than 170 years. At «Handwerk & Design», the association presents selected works by its members as well as the winners and finalists of the BKVAward for Young Arts and Crafts.

Caroline Broadhead: The renowned British artist was a participant in the special SCHMUCK show in 2022 – now she is curating SCHMUCK 2023. Caroline Boradhead has lectured, taught and exhibited around the world. She was course leader for BA Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and is professor emerita.

Danner-Stiftung: The Benno and Therese Danner’sche Kunstgewerbestiftung has been promoting outstanding arts and crafts in Bavaria since 1920 with the aim of anchoring the recognition and appreciation of contemporary arts and crafts in the general public.

EXEMPLA: The largest special show at «Handwerk & Design» features exhibitors from the boatbuilding sector. “Boat building is the pinnacle of craftsmanship,” says Wolfgang Lösche, Head of the Department for Trade Fairs and Exhibitions at the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria, which is organising the special show.

FRAME: FRAME brings together some of the world’s most important galleries to exclusively show the national and international highlights of contemporary jewellery and artistic objects. This year, Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h (Canada), Platina (Sweden) and Tinsel Gallery (South Africa) are among those presenting.

Galleries: Various events are grouped around SCHMUCK in and around Munich. The SCHMUCK events take visitors to various galleries and are a highlight for jewellery enthusiasts from all over the world. An event overview is available at https://www.ihm-handwerk-design.com/.

Herbert Hofmann Prize: The renowned prize is considered the “Oscar” of the jewellery scene. The award ceremony will take place on 11 March 2023 at 5 pm on the stage in Hall B1.

Innovations: There are no limits to creativity. The developments in the scene are multi-layered: the use of alternative materials, new working techniques and different messages. This creates a diverse, exciting exhibition for the trade fair audience.

Journalists: Media representatives are best advised to use the online preaccreditation
via the press ticket portal. With a valid accreditation they have access to the press lounge.

Canoe: Canoes made of birch bark? At EXEMPLA, Artem Lemberg will show how he builds unique, sustainable boats from natural materials. The trade fair audience can also look forward to top-class racing rowing boats, the world’s first sails made from recycled plastic bottles and much more.

Live Workshops: In the “live workshops”, craftsmen and craftswomen demonstrate their work live on site and invite visitors to foster exchange.

Materials: The artists deal sensitively with materials, go in search of alternative materials and surprise with completely new innovations. From recycling to new material combinations to 3D printing: «Handwerk & Design» shows innovative possibilities.

No to environmental pollution: This year’s exhibits focus among other things on sustainability and the environment. What alternative materials are there? How can artists work in an environmentally friendly way? Arts and crafts also deal with the big questions of our time – and find innovative answers.

Online tickets: Tickets for «Handwerk & Design» are available online at tickets.ihm.de. The Day-Ticket costs 15 euros. Pupils, students, trainees, pensioners and severely disabled people are admitted purchasing the Day-Ticket for 9 euros on presentation of proof.

Parking: The Munich exhibition grounds are located directly on the A94 motorway, the West Entrance can be reached via the Munich Riem exit. Ample parking is available directly at the exhibition grounds. A traffic guidance system will direct to the parking facilities. On presentation of the media ticket at the Press Centre, parking spaces in the multi-storey car park at the West Entrance are free of charge for media representatives.

Quality: «Handwerk & Design» with its special shows is the meeting point for first-class arts and crafts and artistic design. Connoisseurs of the scene look forward to renowned international exhibitors.

Restaurants: Café Zeitgeist, right next to the stage in Hall B1, provides visitors with refreshments and snacks. Here, the «Handwerk & Design» programme can be followed comfortably, for example the daily fashion shows are must-see.

SCHMUCK: GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH organises the special show SCHMUCK together with the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria on behalf of the Danner-Stiftung. Jewellery makers from a wide variety of contexts present contemporary jewellery art here. Curator Caroline Broadhead selected 66 participants from 23 countries from 657 applications.
On 11th March 2023, the Herbert Hofmann Prize will be awarded on the stage in Hall B1 at 5 pm.

TALENTE – Meister der Zukunft: The special show TALENTE, sponsored by the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria and supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, presents the most innovative work of young designers under 35 years of age. A jury of experts selected 98 participants from 24 countries. The TALENTE Award will be presented on 11th March 2023 at 4:30 pm on the stage in Hall B1. Underground: Public transport for a convenient journey: The underground station “Messestadt West” is located directly at the exhibition grounds. From the city centre, you can reach the exhibition grounds in about 20 minutes on the U2 underground line.

“Wege zum Design“: Information and orientation in the Bavarian education and training landscape in the fields of design and creative crafts is offered by the presentation “Wege zum Design“. With an exhibition, living cultural heritage and accompanying programme, “Wege zum Design“ shows, lives and conveys craft and design oriented training paths together with ten schools from all over Bavaria. On 12th March, an information forum of the participating schools will take place on the stage in Hall B1 at 11:30 am.

X-fold opportunity to marvel: Hall B1 is waiting to delight the trade fair public with the diversity of arts and crafts. «Handwerk & Design» promises fine oneoffs and small series instead of mass production. Visitors can experience, discover and take home their favourite pieces.

Young Artists: Young artists from all over the world will present their work from 8th to 12th March. Whether as part of the TALENTE – Meister der Zukunft or as a finalist of the BKV Award for Young Arts and Crafts – the «Handwerk & Design» is an important platform for young designers.

ZUKUNFT HANDWERK: ZUKUNFT HANDWERK will be held for the first time at the ICM in Munich from 8th to 10th March 2023, at the same time as the Internationale Hanwerksmesse IHM with its trio of trade fairs Garten München, «Handwerk & Design» and FOOD & LIFE. The hybrid live event brings the entire craft sector together in one place. Top speakers encourage cross-craft exchange on current and future challenges, such as climate change, digitalisation and the shortage of skilled workers.

«Handwerk & Design» was created in 2008 as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. The idea behind it is to bring together outstanding achievements in crafts, arts and crafts and design under one roof at the Internationale Handwerksmesse.
